I’ve felt mystified every time I’ve hooked up with someone who ignored my clit — not only because they were ensuring I never went out with them again, but also because they were skipping right over one of the most sexually sensitive features of the entire human body. It’s like visiting the town of Niagara and not going to see the falls. I mean, what?
While I’m lucky enough now to have partners who speak fluent clitoris, in my early 20s, I often had to take things into my own hands, literally. I’d pack a little clitoral vibe in my bag alongside condoms and lube, and whip it out when the time was right, asking, “Do you wanna see me come?” I loved empowering myself sexually like that, and knowing that I didn’t have to resign myself to unsatisfying sex if my date du jour was unable or unwilling to give my clit the focused attention that I, and many other vulva-possessing folks, need to get off.
Of course, clitoral vibes can be a wonderful component of your solo sex life as well. The strength of their stimulation makes pleasure and orgasms feel more attainable for many people. They pair beautifully with dildos, butt plugs and various other toys, but can be a delight all on their own too. If you like clit stimulation and haven’t yet tried using a vibrator for it, I’d urge you to consider it — if just because you deserve to feel pleasure, and rumbling your most sensitive spot is a reliable way to do it.
What to Look for in a Clit Vibe
1) A Good Motor. In my line of work, I’ve learned that when someone says “I don’t like vibrators,” sometimes they mean “I don’t like the one or two shitty vibrators I’ve tried” — and the difference between a shitty vibrator and a good one is mostly the motor.
Vibrator motors, broadly speaking, can be either “buzzy” or “rumbly.” Buzzy vibrations feel high-pitched and focused on the surface of your skin, and tend to be found in cheaper, battery-operated toys, whereas rumbly vibrations are often found in rechargeable or plug-in toys, go deeper into your muscles and have a lower-pitched resonance to them. “This is one of those things where, once you feel it, you know it, but it can be hard to explain without feeling it,” says Cassandra Corrado, a sex educator.
She generally steers people toward rumbly vibrators, because they’re less prone to giving your skin that weird itchy feeling or temporarily lessening your sensitivity the way buzzy vibes can. But this is really a matter of personal preference, and you can’t know what you like until you try some things out.
A good vibrator motor will also have at least a few different settings for you to experiment with. We tend to want different levels of stimulation as our arousal increases, so it’s good to be able to crank up the power when you want more sensation, or dial it down when you’re feeling overwhelmed.
2) The Right Size and Shape. “Think about what kind of stimulation you like,” Corrado says. “Do you like things to be really centered on your clit, or do you prefer your whole vulva to be engaged?” There’s a wide variety of vibe sizes out there, from teeny-tiny bullet vibes to baseball bat-sized wands and everywhere in between. If you’re not sure yet which kind you might prefer, look for a vibe that offers a few stimulation options — for example, you can use the corner or edge of a wand vibe’s wide head to get a more pinpointed touch.
Size and shape are also relevant if you plan on using your vibe during sex with a partner. Large toys can be hard to slot between bodies in certain positions, and are cumbersome to hold; on the other hand, if a vibe is too small, it might be tricky to keep it positioned in the right spot. Consider what sex acts and positions you may find yourself in with your new vibrator, and pick a shape and size you think will work for those.
3) Ergonomic. “Anything that’s a bit longer is easier to use with partners,” says Erica Van Kuppeveld, a sex educator and dildo-maker. An ultra-petite bullet vibe won’t be as easy for a partner to hold onto, especially if they have to reach around your body to do so, whereas something with a handle can work better.
Ergonomics matter for solo use, too: You want something you can hold comfortably for as long as you need to, with buttons that are easy to locate and push in the heat of the moment. Many clit vibes these days are designed to fit naturally in the palm of your hand, so that using them is barely any more effort than just using your fingers.
4) Body-Safe Material(s). “With all sex toys, you want to avoid non-silicone soft toys, as they can be made of porous materials that cannot be properly cleaned,” says Searah Deysach, a sex educator and the owner of Chicago sex shop Early to Bed. “Look for ones that are 100 percent silicone or made of hard plastic, metal or glass.”
Silicone and plastic are the two main materials that good-quality clit vibes are made of these days, and both can work well for different reasons. Silicone is softer and squishier, which can make for a more comfortable experience, but it doesn’t conduct vibration as well as hard plastic. No matter what material you go with, remember to use lube (stick to the water-based kind if your toy is made of silicone) — it tempers the aggressiveness of vibration and makes everything more pleasurable.
Wondering which vibrators make clit stimulation fun, low-effort and pleasurable as hell? Here are our top picks…
Satisfyer Ultra Power Bullet
A classic bullet vibrator is sometimes exactly what you need, especially if you prefer a toy that’s small and unintimidating. “These silicone mini vibes pack a punch and are a little longer than standard bullets, giving you something to hold onto,” Deysach says. With these, you get five speeds and seven vibration patterns to try out.
The rounded tip of this bullet is made of soft silicone, so it doesn’t transmit vibrations quite as strongly as bullets made of harder materials (see below). But that makes it a gentler and more suitable option for people who have super-sensitive vulvas, clit piercings or vulva pain.
We-Vibe Tango X
The hard plastic body of this cult-fave vibrator helps its super-rumbly vibrations shine through in all their glory. “It’s small, but still powerful as shit,” Corrado says. “A lot of people assume that size correlates to power; that isn’t inherently true in the vibrator market.” You don’t have to begin with bone-quaking vibrations either — this toy has eight speeds and seven patterns, so you can start low and only turn it up when you’re ready.
The rechargeable Tango X also boasts a soft silicone handle, which makes the toy easier to hold onto, even with lubey hands. It’s waterproof and pretty quiet, too — what’s not to love?
Je Joue Rabbit Bullet
For a different spin on a bullet, check out this bunny-inspired toy. “It’s a high-quality silicone vibe that has tickling ears to allow you to vary the sensation on your body,” Deysach says. For instance, those ears can be laid on either side of the clit for surround-sound stimulation (don’t they say our biggest sex organ is between our ears?), or you can stroke the tips over sensitive zones for a more precise touch. Rabbit ears can also feel great on labia and nipples.
The motor on this rechargeable silicone toy is very low-pitched, so the vibrations feel like they get deeper into your body for more profound pleasure. It’s waterproof and has five speeds and seven patterns to enjoy as well. What a useful lil’ rabbit!
Crave Vesper
For something a little fancier, try the Vesper, a bullet vibrator disguised as a chic necklace. Wear it out and no one will know your jewelry is a sex toy — except maybe other people who own the same one. “It can be a fun challenge for you and a partner, if you’re wearing it in public and want to have a quickie somewhere appropriate,” Corrado says.
The vibrations of the Vesper are surprisingly strong but lean way more buzzy than rumbly, so they’re best if you prefer intense vibration on the surface of your skin, rather than vibes that resonate more deeply. It’s made of stainless steel, which lends itself well to temperature play and just looks real pretty when it catches the light.
Je Joue MiMi
Van Kuppeveld loves this broad, flat clitoral vibe for how easy it is to incorporate into whatever you’re already doing. “If you hold it in the palm of your hand, you can really easily add [vibration] into sex,” she says, “like if you’re caressing someone, rubbing your hand on them, but you have a vibrator in there too.”
Its unusual shape gives you lots of options: You can vibrate nearly your whole vulva with the flat side, or angle the vibe various different ways to use its edges and tip for more focused stimulation. It’s got five rumbly vibration speeds and seven patterns to choose from, and it’s even waterproof so you can use it in the shower or tub.
Dame Pom
Another vibe perfectly sized to fit in the palm of your hand (hence its punny name), this rechargeable toy is made of soft silicone, which Corrado says makes it ideal for people who have vulvodynia or other pelvic pain issues. It’s also a good pick if you just prefer gentler touch against that area.
You can use the pointed tip to focus in on the clit, or stimulate the labia and surrounding area too by pressing the entire vibe against your vulva. Try the five intensities and five patterns to see which ones work best for you. Petite, nearly silent and equipped with a travel-lock feature, the Dame Pom is a discreet travel companion — but it’s dependably rumbly enough to become your go-to at home too.
Zumio X
If you like your clit stimulation really precise — think fingertip-sized or smaller — then this vibe might be just what you need. You might also enjoy it if you grew up masturbating with an electric toothbrush, as the shape, size and feeling are similar. Rather than vibrating in the conventional sense, the Zumio’s tiny tip actually rotates in a circle super quickly. This creates a sensation that’s similar to vibration, without causing as much of the the temporary numbness that some people report from vibrators.
The Zumio kind of looks like an alien antenna, but that slim profile is what makes it such a versatile vibe: It can slide between bodies with ease, and you can use either its tip or the side of its shaft to stimulate various sensitive spots. The intensity of the rotations tends to diminish when you put pressure on it, though, so if you like to press hard on your vibes, this probably isn’t the one for you.
Eroscillator 2 Plus with Ultra Soft Finger Tip
If you can look past the odd steampunk aesthetic of this toy, it has a lot to offer. It’s another vibrator-that’s-not-quite-a-vibrator, because it oscillates back and forth at a high speed rather than vibrating against the body. Reduced numbness is a major benefit of oscillations; some people also report being able to have multiple orgasms more easily with oscillations because they’re not as overstimulating as vibrations can be.
I love how easy this long, slim vibe is to hold onto and position where I want it during penetrative sex. It comes with several swappable attachments, but the “soft finger tip” one is my fave — it’s like being lovingly fingered by a marshmallow (it’s better than it sounds, I swear). The Eroscillator has been my number one ride-or-die clit vibe for over 10 years, because its oscillations deliver orgasms I can only describe as divine. For me, they feel deep, sweet and practically inevitable.
Swan Wand
Van Kuppeveld adores the incredibly rumbly vibrations that this toy serves up. Can confirm: I once had one in my bag while riding public transit and didn’t realize for several minutes that I’d accidentally turned the vibe on at full blast, because I mistook its vibrations beside me for the rumbling of the bus motor. Who knows why it’s called the Swan Wand, but they do say swans mate for life, and I can see wanting to make a lifelong commitment to this vibrator — it’s that good.
The rechargeable silicone toy is long enough to be used internally, if you want some vibration on your G-spot or other sensitive zones in there. But as with just about any vibrator, it can also be used clitorally. Its wider end covers a lot of ground, like a wand vibe, while its slimmer end is better for honing in on small areas. Each end has its own motor, with seven vibration settings each. This toy would be a smart pick if you want a vibrator that can be used several different ways, and will likely feel fantastic any way you choose to use it.
Magic Wand Rechargeable
If you like (or think you might like) clit stimulation that’s broad and very powerful, Corrado says the Magic Wand is up to the task. There are other wands out there, sure — some others she likes are the heavy, British-made Doxy and the colorful, shiny Le Wand — but the Magic Wand is generally considered the gold standard for wand vibes.
It’s got so much power that you’d think it would need to be plugged into the wall — but this one is actually rechargeable, so you can use it even when there’s no outlet nearby. Though it’s known for being jackhammer-level strong, its four speeds start low enough that even a vibrator newbie can enjoy it, albeit maybe through underwear or some other buffer. You can use the full width of the wand’s silicone head if you like stimulation that covers your whole vulva, or you can tilt it so that just the corner of the head is making contact with your clit for a more focused sensation.
The Magic Wand may not be the most ergonomic or discreet toy on the market, but for sheer power and an iconic look, there’s nothing quite like it.
