Age Discrimination in the Workplace Is on the Rise — But It’s Hard to Prove

At just 35 years old, Javier, who once seemed destined for a long, successful career in digital marketing, is now convinced he’s too old for many of the jobs in his field. “These digital marketing companies are all young and hip, and they’re looking for kids because they can pay them less for a shitload of work,” he says. “I realized that because I’m 35, I’m becoming less and less employable.” He may well be right, but it’s hard to prove; for instance, hiring managers could simply point to his spotty professional history, not his age, as the reason why he’s an unattractive candidate.
