Last of the Phone Sex Operators

They do still exist. You just have to know where to listen

“Wanna get off right now?”

“Talk to a real horny girl at a price anyone can afford?”

“Looking for kinky domination, fetish and BDSM phone fun?”

The familiar sounds of the phone sex industry are the latest subject of our MEL Stories podcast. While phone sex is a lot different than it was at its height in the 1980s and 1990s — like everything else, it’s been forever altered by the internet — it’s still around, if just in a form that’s better described as audio porn. On the podcast, we talk to Cheryl, a longtime phone sex operator who took her first call when she was still a virgin; Jonny, a phone sex operator for about a year who played a female operator named Tilly because his voice sounded exactly like actress Jennifer Tilly’s; “Steve,” a phone sex super user whose wife suggested he give it a try; and AJ, the next frontier of phone sex operator who posts most of her audio erotica to SoundCloud.

Cheryl, owner of Cheap Phone Sex with Cheryl

“The phone sex industry was basically created by Gloria Leonard at High Society as a revenue stream for her magazine company. In the 1970s, 1980s and for most of the 1990s, the only way to find a phone sex number was in the back of skin magazines. Once High Society became successful, other publications mimicked them; they were even advertised in the telephone book.”

Jonny Makeup, one-time phone sex operator in the early aughts

“The majority of the girls in the call centers were black girls playing white girls. There were also two gay guys — me and another guy named Mon, who stayed on to be a manager.

“Mon and other management would be in this little stage together, listening to my calls. They would talk to each other, and if they thought the guy was going to come too quick, they would feed me lines and tell me what to say so he wouldn’t. It was a crazy racket.”

“Steve,” phone sex super user

“There’s a huge chasm between the style and approach of a male phone sex operator versus a female phone sex operator. When you call a male operator, they’re ready to go. It’s like, ‘Let’s get DTF!’ With women, it’s more about finding out what you’re into and having more of a human connection. A lot of times when I call male phone sex operators, I feel like a piece of meat.”

AJ, a.k.a. FunLuvinAJ on SoundCloud

“I started my audio erotica work on Literotica just for fun. Then I began to put stuff up on SoundCloud because it was more accessible and reached a younger audience. SoundCloud is where I store a lot my sexy audios now. They distribute themselves; in fact, a lot of people re-blog my materials.

“It seems to me that the audience that seeks out private audio at Literotica and Soundcloud is more of an intellectual crowd. Whereas for phone sex callers, it’s more of a spontaneous thing: You’re home on a Friday night, you’re horny and you’re bored.”
